2024 Solar Eclipse MWDX

On April 8th 2024, there was that long-awaited Total Solar Eclipse happening across North-America. Although I was at work by the time the eclipse went on, I didn’t bother having a look outside, not only because I haven’t had any special lens (neither were my colleagues btw) but because I was more interested by the effect the eclipse would have on mediumwave propagation. As for the eye show, I knew that I can rely on a quick boom of online images. But, this is just me. My wife and many others were delighted to see it with their own eyes (and behind lenses). Oh well, maybe next time …

Now back to DX. Nowadays with SDRs, it is easy to *see* and later analyze what is really happening regarding MW propagation enhancement, just as it was during this unique event. More on this later on that page.

See on the map bellow my location vs the total darkness’ eclipse path. We enjoyed anyhow a 98.44% of total darkness, which was more than enough to spark “nightly-like” mediumwave propagation.

Bellow are the detailed logs sorted by state/province. Needless to mention that some logs are missing because they just couldn’t be identified properly. Interestingly, some daytimers were also heard, which make them kind of unique because they never could have been logged under (normal) nightly propagation. There is also a text version of the logs here sorted by frequency.

Daytime only stations are shown in orange. I assumed that the 24/7 stations were all operating at their day power and pattern.

Equipments:

Microtelecom Perseus w Jaguar Pro + 105m / 350ft long wire @ 35 - 215 degrees

SDRPlay (RSP1) w SDRUno + 450m / 1475ft Beverage @ 55 degrees (logs shown in yellow)

Both SDR recordings were unattended and scheduled to run between 13:30 and 17:30 EDT. All the stations were logged around the darkness peak, i.e. between 15:00 and 16:00 EDT. You might also take delight in a number of audio clips attached to some of the station logs. Funny to hear on some of the recordings, a live coverage of the eclipse. Many stations were right into their afternoon drive-home show at that time, giving traffic and weather; thus making them easier to ID.

Note that Quebec and some New England stations, plus New York powerhouses, are commonly heard at my place during daytime.

Above, see the propagation enhancement over the AM band occurring at 19:30 UTC (15:30 EDT), which matches the partial darkness forecast for my location that was scheduled for 15:29 local time (plot generated by Jaguar Pro).

Above are my logs shown in a form of a dynamic map. It is interesting to observe that most of the maximum distance logs were located near the edges of the total darkness path. As for the map itself, you can zoom-in, click directly on the location of each station, which then triggers a (left) panel that brings the station details and distance. If the map is displayed in full screen, you can also click on whatever station listed on the left panel and it will show its location on the map. The map was created using Google My Maps with a core file containing my logs that were created and powered by MWLIST
